President Joe Biden’s administration will formally propose a rule to bar medical debt from individual credit reports Tuesday, a move that would prevent major health care bills from negatively impacting borrowing.Vice President Kamala Harris and Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Director Rohit Chopra will announce the measure, a person familiar with the plan said, speaking on condition of anonymity to discuss the move before it is made public. ABC News first reported the proposal.The move is the latest effort from the administration to help lower costs for consumers ahead of November’s election rematch between Biden and Republican Donald Trump, in which inflation will be a key issue.The proposal has been percolating for months. The CFPB said last year it was working on the change. At the time, the agency was also looking to stop lenders from considering such debts in an application and curb certain repayment practices.The exact parameters of the proposed rule and when it would take effect are unclear. Chopra told ABC it could take effect in 2025, potentially making its enactment dependent on the election.

The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) reported that global food prices increased for the third consecutive month in May. This rise was driven by higher prices for cereals and dairy products, which outweighed declines in sugar and vegetable oil prices. The re-acceleration of food price growth should be a cause for concern among policymakers.The FAO Food Price Index, which tracks the international prices of a basket of globally traded food, averaged 120.4 in May, marking a .9% increase from its revised April level. Despite this rise, the index is still 3% lower than a year ago and 24.9% below its peak in March 2022. However, the index has reserved some losses over the past several months and turned higher. The FAO warned, "The recent adverse weather conditions in the Black Sea region will likely result in a downgrade in world wheat production, a possibility not yet reflected in the forecast." The bigger story here is global food prices are beginning to rise once again. This is potentially catastrophic for emerging market economies where currencies are moving lower and, inversely, food prices are moving higher. Folks in these countries have to allocate higher percentages of their incomes to food purchases, and the increase in that only produces financial stress. In return, higher food prices increase the risk of social instability.

Mexico’s president-elect Claudia Sheinbaum has vowed to press ahead with her party’s controversial plans to overhaul the judiciary by directly electing top judges, in comments that hit the peso late on Monday.In her first news conference since her landslide win, Sheinbaum said discussion of the judicial reform would begin immediately, with a view to approving it in the first months of the new legislature, which convenes in September.“There should be a broad discussion in these months so people get to know it,” she said at the National Palace after a lunch with outgoing president Andrés Manuel López Obrador, her political mentor.Only one country, socialist Bolivia, currently elects supreme court judges, according to the Federal Judicial Center.

Six Russian nationals suspected to have terror ties to ISIS have been arrested in a coordinated sting operation spanning Los Angeles, New York and Philadelphia, The Post can exclusively reveal.Two ICE sources confirmed to The Post they arrested the six people, who hail from Tajikistan, over the last week after the FBI contacted the agency to warn it.Part of the investigation featured a wiretap which revealed one of the now-arrested individuals was talking about bombs, the sources said.“Remember the Boston marathon [bombing]? I’m afraid something like that might happen again or worse,” one of the sources told The Post.The target who was subject to the wiretap was previously released by federal authorities at the southern border with a court date next year, but it has since emerged he has potential ties to ISIS, sources said.In a joint statement, the Department of Homeland Security and FBI told The Post: “Over the last few days, ICE agents arrested several non-citizens pursuant to immigration authorities.“The actions were carried out in close coordination with the FBI’s Joint Terrorism Task Forces. The individuals arrested are detained in ICE custody pending removal proceedings … The FBI and DHS will continue working around the clock with our partners to identify, investigate, and disrupt potential threats to national security. ”The arrests come after warnings from FBI Director Chris Wray about possible ISIS terror plots being staged on US soil and the group’s potential for exploiting the southern border.In April, Wray warned lawmakers that a possible “coordinated attack” could take place in the US following an ISIS-K attack on a concert hall in Moscow — carried out by citizens of Tajikistan — that killed 145 people and wounded hundreds more.
