It is important, but let it occur naturally. Even if it isn't fun, forcing people to get along never works, and you can't rush the process.

Regardless of race, and the diversity we face with one another each day, the common curtsey is to treat one another with respect. Even when facing difficulties such as different personality, and overall, not getting along, racial diversity doesn't have to be a bad thing. I do agree it's important, but i have a different take on it. If those of different backgrounds and ethnicity wish to shine light upon their culture with each other, they can. If they wish not to, they don't have to. There is no need to get foul with each other.
